“Getting out of the studio and experiencing the western
lifestyle is one of the best things about being a western artist.
I’m primarily a studio artist, but I try to spend plenty of time
roping, riding or just hanging out with real cowboys.
Being a part of things gives my artwork authenticity and
teaches me a lot about my subjects.”

“Most of what I’ve learned about horses and the Vaquero
style of riding comes from my friend Buck Brannaman
Here I am getting a loop ready at one of Buck’s ropings.
I usually get some really good photographs whenever
I’m at the Houlihan Ranch.”

“I’m helping bring in steers to ship at a ranch near Sheridan,
Wyoming.  Earlier, when the light was good, I had my camera
out and got some good shots.  In this picture,  I’ve finally
stashed the camera in order to offer a little more help
with the gather.”

“An artist friend once said, ‘Painting outdoors is like taking an
open book test —everything you need is right in front of you.’
That was definitely the case at this powwow in Montana”
